Set against the vibrant landscape of South Florida, and featuring an astonishing ensemble of award-winning actors and breakouts alike, Waves traces the epic emotional journey of a suburban African-American family—led by a well-intentioned but domineering father—as they navigate love, forgiveness and coming together in the aftermath of a loss. From acclaimed director Trey Edward Shults, Waves is a heartrending story about the universal capacity for compassion and growth even in the darkest of times.

Trey Edward Shults

Trey Shults is an American director, writer, producer, and actor. In 2010, he made his directorial debut in the short film Mother and Son. In 2011 and 2012, Shults variously served as film loader, post-production intern, and intern, on three of Terrence Malick’s films: Song to Song, Voyage of Time, and The Tree of Life. Despite his youth, Trey has established his mature empathetic prowess and tremendous technical skill with the debut of his first feature, Krisha. The film won SXSW, screened at Cannes 2015 and was released by A24. The film won the John Cassavetes Award at Indy Spirit, Best Directorial Debut from the National Board of Review, and the Breakthrough Director Award at the Gotham Awards. Trey’s second feature, It Comes At Night, a family drama weaved into a genre film about a father who will stop at nothing to protect his wife and son from a malevolent, mysterious presence terrorizing them right outside their doorstep, was produced by Dave Kaplan (It Follows) and financed by A24.The film stars Joel Edgerton, Carmen Ejogo, Riley Keough, and Chris Abbott.

Bun B

It’s been well over 25 years since Bernard Freeman—known better to the world as Bun B—changed the hip-hop landscape as one half of the legendary UGK alongside the late Pimp C. In 2006 Bun B won an ASCAP Award for Top R&B/Hip Hop Song for his writing and performance on the single “Give Me That” and also holds an MTV Music Award for Best R&B Video for Beyonce’s “Check On It”. His third solo album, 2010’s Trill O.G. was met with critical acclaim. By 2013, he would release his last project before his musical break, The Epilogue. As a professor of Theology at Houston’s Rice University, Bun along with Professor Anthony Pinn led a course about Religion and Hip-Hop Culture. In August 2018, Bun B delivered Return of the Trill, a full length effort produced by Big K.R.I.T.. From selling millions of albums to Grammy nominations, changing academia, publishing, sneaker, food, and car culture, plus philanthropy, there isn’t much that Bun B hasn’t done. Bun B is also a board member of the Houston Cinema Arts Society.

Flash Gordon Parks

Jason Woods aka Flash Gordon Parks is an ethnomusicologist from the city of Houston, TX. He earned a Bachelor's Degree in Photography at Sam Houston State University in 2001. In 2005 Flash Gordon Parks published a book of photography and poetry called The Beautiful Side of Ugly with Eric Blaylock, which combined Blaylock's poetry with FGP's images to document the beauty of urban areas of Houston. As a DJ, he strives to educate the audience through carefully thought out selections lectures on the importance of Houston's Rich Music History. He has lectured at Contemporary Arts Museum Houston, Rice University, Art League Houston and more. In 2015 Flash Gordon Parks directed the documentary "This Thing We Do Houston DJ Culture Revealed".
