A Black Music Month Celebration: Summer of Soul

Houston Cinema Arts Society and Houston Museum of African American Culture present a FREE Drive-In Screening of the Sundance-winning documentary, Summer of Soul. The film will be preceded by an hour long Chopped and Screwed Mixtape by DJ Red featuring Stevie Wonder, Sly and the Family Stone, Nina Simone, and more.
Doors open at 7pm with DJ Red's Mixtape beginning at 7:30pm. The film starts at 8:30pm.
Each ticket is per vehicle and not per person. Registration is required and capacity is limited, make sure to claim a ticket before they're sold out. This event is first come, first serve so make sure to arrive early. Registration does not guarantee entry.
In his acclaimed Sundance Film Festival directorial debut, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson presents a powerful and transporting documentary—part music film, part historical record created around an epic event that celebrated Black history, culture and fashion. Over the course of six weeks in the summer of 1969, just one hundred miles south of Woodstock, The Harlem Cultural Festival was filmed in Mount Morris Park (now Marcus Garvey Park). The footage was never seen and largely forgotten–until now. Summer of Soul shines a light on the importance of history to our spiritual well-being and stands as a testament to the healing power of music during times of unrest, both past and present. The feature includes never-before-seen concert performances by Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Sly & the Family Stone, Gladys Knight & the Pips, Mahalia Jackson, B.B. King, The 5th Dimension and more. Summer of Soul won the U.S. Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award in the U.S. Documentary category at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival.
